    GIS Technician—Position Description

    Under the direction of a Project Manager and a Project Director, the GIS Technician is responsible for providing GIS support to the various components of cultural resource management conducted by CSH.

    The position involves:

    • Georeferencing of historic maps and aerial photographs, with overlays of various GIS data layers to support historic background research

    • Preparation of GPS equipment for archaeological field crews.  Post-processing of field-collected GPS data and GIS map production

    • Creation/maintenance of cultural resources GIS data, including digitizing hard-copy data sources and entry of tabular data

    • Production of high-quality maps for inclusion in technical reports for submission to the State Historic Preservation or other agencies for review and presentation to project-related stakeholders

    • Incorporating client-provided architectural/engineering plans and data (typically in CAD format) for GIS analyses

    Requirements

    An undergraduate degree in Anthropology/Archaeology, Geography, or related field and/or post-graduate GIS Certificate.  Experience with ESRI ArcGIS software, including ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Pro, and ArcGIS Online web mapping. Experience with hand-held (Garmin) GPS and mapping-grade (Trimble) GPS units is preferred. Candidate must be detail oriented with good communication, organizational, and multitasking skills, with high standards for cartographic design. Previous experience working with Hawai‘i cultural resources data and historic maps is greatly preferred.

    Compensation

    CSH is looking for a permanent, full-time employee, averaging 40 hours per week. Compensation is commensurate with past experience, skills, education, and productivity. Pay packages include medical and dental insurance, a 401(k) program, a paid time off program, and a company profit sharing program.

    Summer of Maps is a 12-week program that provides competitive fellowships to students and matches them with challenging spatial analysis projects with nonprofit organizations. 

     The program has several objectives for students: 

    • Provide a high quality first professional experience for students with advanced geospatial analysis skills in order to prepare them to become the next generation of GIS professionals. 
    • Develop useful geospatial analysis deliverables that can be used to improve the operations of nonprofit organizations that would otherwise not be able to do so. 


    Fellows are provided a $6,000 stipend and one-on-one mentoring by the Data Analytics team with support from other Azavea teams during the 12-week fellowship. The nonprofit organizations receive sophisticated analysis and visualization of their data.     GEOSPATIAL INTERN at Mandli Communications

    We are seeking motivated individuals for the position of Geospatial Intern. This position is part of an internship program between Mandli Communications and the University of Hawaii. The Geospatial Intern will be responsible for assisting in the creation of data collection system validation sites, the collection and processing of validation site datasets, and operating company vehicles and data collection systems to collect geospatial data of roadways and asset features throughout Hawaii. As a company that prides itself on the use and integration of technology, ideal candidates will have a strong interest in the application of technology and geographic information systems.

    THE INTERN WILL LEARN:

    • The operation of advanced technology; including LiDAR, camera arrays, and the Laser Crack Measurement System (LCMS)

    • The management and examination of large GIS datasets

    • Project management, logistics planning, and route optimization

    • Operation of a highly-accurate geospatial system

    RESPONSIBILITIES WILL INCLUDE:

    • Operate mobile data collection vehicle and data collection systems

    • Assist in review and analysis of data to ensure quality standards are met

    • Collaborate with company personnel to troubleshoot and resolve issues that arise in the field

    • Assist with in-field setup of sites to validate the performance of data collection systems

    • Accurately survey and record validation site quality control and reference features

    • Operate data collection systems to collect validation site datasets for analysis and reporting

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Must be enrolled as a student at the University of Hawaii

    • Must hold a valid drivers license and acceptable driving record

    • Must pass a company drug test

    SCHEDULE AND COMPENSATION:

    • 10 - 20 hours per week between December 1st and February 28th

    • $12.00 per hour TRAVEL:

    • Travel is primarily local during business hours, some non-local overnight travel may be expected
